English learning advices

馃槉Hello, learners and teachers!

Today, I would like to sum up this blog by telling you some advices which I found useful for learning English.

What do I have to know for learning and teaching English?
Learning English is about repetition: What do I mean? When learning English, repetition is very important to remember either new vocabulary or new gramatical structures. Children need to repeat to remember, and we, as a teachers, have to make this repetition process as much fun as posible.

Surround children with English: If we are teaching/learning English at home, we should decorate the walls with english vocabulary, english pictures, etc. The same happens with teaching or learning English at school, decorating walls with tricky words, for example, it would be a good idea to remember that words in every moment.

Using athentic materials: Try to read English texts written for and by native speakers would be a good idea. It could be a challenge at first but a lot more motivated for students. Also, we can teach our students traditional either British or American games (like Simmon says) to introduce them to the culture.

Learning while playing: Learning a new language is always a challenge for our children, and we don't want them to get frustrate. So, what can we do to avoid that frustration? Teaching them while they have fun! We have a great amount of materials to get them have fun, such as; crosswords, puzles, sing songs, read comics,... We want them to be motivated when they learn a new language so, let's use funny materials and learn while playing!

Reading Games

馃槉Hello, mates!
Reading should be difficult for learners, I guess because it takes time to read a text paying attention and answer questions about it. That's why I'm going to post different ways to practice this hard skill.

There we go… READING IS FUN!

Find the pair: Find the pair is an easy and practicable game to make learners pay attention to spelling. This game consist of taking cards which are faced down. If the word is "wall", for example, the student has to take another card and if it's the same word "wall", the cards are for the student. Who wins the game? The person who wins is who have the more quantity of pairs.

Tongue-twister: Tongue-twister game is a good option for children to practice their Reading skill and have fun at the same time. They Will laugh a lot trying to read tongue-twisters.

Watching films: as easy as that, watching films is a good option to get students used to the entonation, the accent and the native expressions. As we all know, there are many countries with English as a first language, so students need to get used to different accents, and what more than learning accents by watching films?

Bingo: Bingo is an easy game that motivate children to pay attention to English's words entonation and accent. Teacher can make a bingo board with words and sounds that students are learning in that momento. So, by doing that, learners have to pay attention to the listening to get the Word the teacher says.

Broken telephone: Broken telephone is a well known and funny game for practising listening skills.  I've thought, in order to make this game more difficult, that children will have to do it with eyes closed. It will help learners to concentrate themselves a bit better and they will pay more attention to the words they have to remember and repeat.
